WOWvx Technology

WOWvx technology is developed by Philips 3D Solutions and indicates the use of technology related to 3 dimensional viewing experience. This technology comprises the technology to manufacture autostereoscopic lenticular 3D displays, display signal processing to generate multiple views for 3D displays, interface specification for 3D displays based on the 2D-plus-Depth format and 3D content creation and conversion tools.

WOWvx based products make content richer, more informative and more entertaining for the viewer so that it almost comes ‘alive’. WOWvx provides the latest innovation in signal processing and display technology to attract the consumer’s attention and is well positioned for use in a wide range of consumer and professional applications such as digital signage, gaming, simulation and video.

2D-plus-Depth (also see the 2D-plus-Depth section)
The 3D data format used by WOWvx is in the form of ‘image+depth’ (2D-plus-Depth). The depth information indicates the position of each 2D image pixel on the depth axis in or out of the screen plane. Rendering of 9 different views out of the 2D-plus-Depth data is done within the display by means of integrated hardware. These 9 views are spatially dispersed in front of the display by the microlens layer. The 2D-plus-Depth interface has several clear advantages over other interface formats (like fully pre-rendered or Nx2D (mosaic):

• Decoupling of content creation from content visualization, since no 3D display specific information or characteristics (such as number of views and optical properties) are part of the actual content.
• It can easily be implemented into existing 2D creation and distribution infrastructures. The 2D-plus-Depth format offers flexibility and compatibility with existing production equipment and compression tools.
• It ensures 3D application performance within existing distribution mechanisms and standards, with a required bandwidth close to 2D.
• It allows applications to use different 3D display screen sizes and designs in the same system.
• Supported by various companies across the display industry, several companies including Philips have taken the lead in MPEG standardization of 3D video based on the 2D-plus-Depth format.
